Northeastern So Far

I know it is a lot to cram a month of school into a single blog post but I figured I could try. I am taking four classes and I am surprisingly enjoying all of them...for the most part. My favorite class is called Intro. To Business and it is basically a semester long group project. Northeastern has parterned with the TJX Corporation (TjMaxx,Marshalls, Homegoods, etc.) to be our corporate advisors. The entire freshmen business class has been broken into groups of 4 to come up with a company and product to sell to TJX. As a group we have to write a full business plan and do multiple presentations. At the end of the semester 4 groups are selected to present their plan to the major executives of TJX. My group is called TjTXT and we provide mobile marketing in the form of text messages to TJX customers. Our first presentation went really well and we feel like we are on a roll to the final 4. Almost every week an executive from TJX comes to Northeastern to do a presentation to the freshmen business class. Last week our speaker was the Senior Executive Vice President. I am also taking macroeconomics at 8:00 AM 3 days a week. It is a very dry subject and lets just say I am very thankfull to have the 25 year old, italian, doctorial student as my professor because that's the only reason I get there in the morning. My thrid class is college writing and last week we took a trip to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to do research for a paper. Last but not least is my arts requirement called "Bethoveen". I was really disapointed to find out that this is more of a history class than music class but it is going well so far. I used my 1 month of business training to come up with a product to sell to my Beethoven class that has made me a nice little profit. My professor is really experienced and has played in the Boston Philharmonic for the past ten years. As far as extra activites go I have become a very active member in the Resident Student Association (RSA). Two weeks ago I went on a weekend retreat with RSA where I met a ton of new friends and quickly fell in love with the group. RSA is broken into six subcomittees and I am on the programming committee and housing services committte. I am very proud to say that 2 days ago I was apointed Assistant Vice President of Housing Services. It is just about a full time job with office hours, late night emails, and a constantly full schedule. Though this position is very time consuming I am so thankfull to have it because I am the only freshmen with a leadership position this high up. As assistant VP I have already attended meetings with the Housing Task Force (a group of 4 students and 3 falculty members) and am scheduled to present ideas to the Food Advisory Board next week. Every year the RSA takes 11 of its members on a trip to the regional conference and I am very excited to say that I have been chosen as one of the 11 to attend this conference in November. Even though my schedule is packed I couldn't leave out volunteer work. Through RSA I have been asked to help plan speakers for a special "giving fair" in January. I also have an application in to become a tutor for young children in downtown Boston. Even with this full schedule I have left plenty of time to have fun. My roommate is perfect and I have become best friends with her as well as a girl down the hall. Our favorite hobby is going to the dinning hall because the food here is amazing! My favorite part would have to be the make-your-own stir fry station. Don't worry Colin. As much as you wanted to laugh at me for gaining the freshman 15 I have actually lost weight due to the amazing gym and exercise classes. I am so excited because tomorrow my best friend Kim is coming to visit for the weekend. Well thanks so much for reading my blog. I promise the posts will never be this long again. Please email me so I don't get lonely.

Love,
Mallory
