And We're Back...

Hey Everyone!

I have been back at school for more than a week and so far everything is going really well. A few days before the semester started I discovered I was accepted into the Northeastern Honors Program. I am really excited to be part of the program and I am taking honors Microeconomics this semester.

My schedule consists of five classes including Calculus, Financial Accounting & Reporting, Microeconomics, Computer Science, and Intro. to Professional Business. As of now I am enjoying all of my classes except for computer science. I seem to have a bit more work this semester, but I am sure I will be fine.

As far as non-class related activities go, I am busier than every. The Resident Student Association is still going through some major structural changes, but it appears as though I am going to be staying in my position. Right now I am working on launching our new television station by designing posters, flyer's, and pens as well as organizing several launch parties.

After completing a full semester of tutoring in Cambridge, I have decided to concentrate on other things in the Spring. Cambridge ended up being too far away when traveling by city transportation and was really not the best area to be walking through at night. I have decided to join the Student Government Association instead, as this directly complements my work with the Resident Student Association.

I am currently working on my bid for First Year Experience. For those of you who don't remember, this is the award I will be bidding on in March. I have decided to do a "Playbill" themed bid which should win points for creativity as well as be a good representation of my personality. More to come soon...

This past weekend I went to see the movie Bride Wars with Nicole and Leah in the theater district of Boston. This area was so nice and just reminded me of how much of Boston I have yet to experience.

Well...that's all for now! Talk to you soon!

Love,
Mallory

16 Days Until Thanksgiving

Hello Everyone!

I know it has been almost 2 weeks since I last posted but I have been extremely busy. Last Wednesday night a venture capitalist came to talk to the freshmen business students. He told us all about his job as well as good things to include in the company business plans we are writing. Let me just say that I WANT TO BE A VENTURE CAPITALIST! The guy that presented was only 26 years old which makes him one of the youngest venture capitalists in the country. After conducting a little research I have discovered that statistically the venture capital field is made up of 100% men and the average age is 48. Leave it to me to always want what seems impossible. Last Friday was Halloween which was really fun because one of my roommate's friends visited and we all got dressed up in costumes. The city of Boston turned into one big Halloween party. From the subway to the highway the streets were covered with college students in costume. Saturday and Sunday were by far the best part of the week because my friend Teddy came to visit. Point of Information-Teddy was the guy I want to Junior Prom with and who moved to MA 1 year ago. He met me at Northeastern for dinner and then we drove to his house. On the way to his house we drove through Salem which was really exciting because it was all decorated for Halloween. I was really excited to visit Teddy's new house and spend time catching up with his parents. Teddy's mom is the VP of Marketing for Charles River and she told me about this great internship I may want to apply for in the future. Nothing else really exciting happened until Tuesday which was election day. At 11 pm when CNN projected Obama as the winner, the city of Boston went crazy. Thousands of students from many colleges ran out onto the streets and started screaming with excitement. A group of students started a parade that went all the way down the main street and ended with a swim in the reflection pool. I am proud to say I was at the library writing a financial report and not gallivanting through the city in the cold. On Friday at 8pm the HUSKY HUNT began! This 24 hour scavenger hunt was so much fun but really exhausting. The craziest part of the evening was from 11:30 pm to 7am when my group of 5 was stuck in Cambridge. The public transportation closes at 12:30 and we were not allowed to use a taxi. Luckily, we had so many clues to collect that the subway was open an hour before we were ready to get on. My team did really well but we won't find out the results until December. I have no school today due to Veterans Day so I am very busy preparing my business plan and presentation. We have a presentation tomorrow and the final project is due right after Thanksgiving break. My group is doing really well and we think we are on our way to the final 4. Have a great week! 16 days until Thanksgiving!

Mallory

Cold Northeastern

Hi Everyone!

I know its been a few days since I last posted but life really hasn't been too exciting. On Thursday night I bundled up and tackled an RSA BBQ in the cold. It was really fun because I got to grill. I really miss cooking so when I come home for Thanksgiving and Christmas everyone better be ready to eat. The Housing Task Force has been very busy this past week because we are getting ready to send out housing applications. Housing is going to be very complicated this year because we are opening a new skyscraper residence hall. My Housing Services committee has also been very busy passing a proposal for Gender Neutral Housing. Due to the hard work of Housing Services students of both genders will be able to room together in the new building next year. Last night I made the trek to Cambridge to tutor my 6th grader. I hate to say it but it's not really going that well. It has only been two weeks and I feel more like a babysitter than a tutor. My student is really smart and doesn't really need a tutor. She never wants my help and when I try to correct one of her answers she gets annoyed. I travel an hour to get to the school and all I end up doing is sitting at a table watching someone do homework. This morning I had my Beethoven midterm and it went really well. Well, that's all for now. Have a great week!

Love,
Mallory

P.S. Have a safe trip down to Florida Grammy!

Pumpkin Carving!

Good Evening!

It has been a very busy 2 days since I last posted on the blog. On Tuesday (yesterday) I met with my team to register for Northeastern's annual Husky Hunt. The Husky Hunt is an award winning scavenger hunt that takes place for 24 hours throughout the city of Boston. It is a very popular program because it is extremely fun and each person on the wining team gets a free Jet Blue airplane ticket to anywhere in the country. We had to complete a very challenging test with riddles in a record time to be considered as a team. Luckily we completed the test successfully and we are now registered to compete. After the Husky Hunt registration I participated in another team contest. My residence hall floor ran a pumpkin carving competition which I participated in with my two friends Nicole and Leah. We ended up carving Barack Obama and I must say that it was very successful. It turned out that we only missed first place by half a point. You can see a picture of our pumpkin above. After pumpkin carving I went to another meeting for the "Give 5" event. Right now I am conducting research on environmental speakers. I have been put in charge of bringing an environmental speaker to campus and I have been working with a company in California with speaker connections. I have completed some initial negotiations which have already provided me with some great experience. I will keep you posted on who I end up bringing to campus. Today I started my day by going to Macroeconomics class. I got back my midterm and discovered that I got an A as well as the highest grade in the class. I must say I am very proud of myself. Later in the afternoon I went to the Northeastern Health Fair where I received a free flu shot. This should be helpful for the upcoming cold winter months. Tonight the Senior VP of Marketing from the TJX Corporation came to speak to our business class. He provided some great insight that should be very helpful for our project. I ended my evening with a Resident Student Association General Council meeting followed by dinner with my VP of Housing Services. It was also a very big day because I received a key to the RSA office. This now means that I have no excuse not to spend every moment of my life there. Oh well... I did want all of this. I am having a great time staying so busy and I have discovered that I'm not satisfied if I am not running around like a stressful crazy person. Have a great night! Write to you soon!
XOXO,
Mallory

Weekend With Colin

Hello Hello!

I had another exciting weekend with company! Colin came to visit me Friday night and stayed until Sunday afternoon. Friday night Colin treated me to dinner at UNO's which was very kind of him. On Saturday morning we walked Newbury Street which unfortunately didn't last long because Colin decided to bring Winter with him for the weekend. After a nice lunch in my dining hall we headed off to Harvard Square where we walked the campus while speaking in a British accent. This whole ordeal was suppose to make us sound smart but in fact just made us feel dumb..good times though. We woke up early Sunday morning so we could cram Quincy Market into the trip. Colin had a great time walking by all the stores and stands and was very impressed with the wide selection of food choices. After dumping Colin at the bus station (just joking...I made sure he got on the bus OK) I dashed off to a meeting for the Resident Student Association Regional Conference. After the regional's meeting I ran to the other end of campus for a meeting with my committee (Housing Services). I spent the rest of my night in my room with Nicole because we were both dead from our past two weekends. As much fun as its been having company two weeks in a row I can't wait to SLEEP this coming weekend. Today I had another business meeting. We are piece by piece putting together what I think will be a very successful business plan. After Intro. to Bus. class I met with the Housing Task Force. Now is a very busy time for the Housing Task Force because housing applications go out in November. With a new residence hall opening in the Fall lots has to be done. Tonight I had my first tutoring session in Cambridge. The girl I am helping is in 6th grade and is very nice. I can't wait to go back next Monday! Though it takes me almost an hour to get home from Cambridge I got back just in time to watch my new all time favorite TV show; Gossip Girl (thanks Mom). Thanks for reading!

Until Next Time...

Sick yet busy

Hello Again!

So for the past 8 days I have had a fever (102 degrees) which has created a ton of fun. I went to the doctor this morning and now I am awaiting strep test results. I have still remained extremely busy though. On Wednesday I had a macroeconomics midterm which went really well. I also had my first Food Advisory Meeting. Food Advisory is a group that gets to give input on anything having to do with the cafes on campus. It was really fun because the school basically takes all our input and they are willing to make any changes. Tonight I had an interview with TutoringPlus to see if I would be accepted into their program. I was accepted and I start my first tutoring session on Monday. I am so excited for this weekend because Colin is coming to visit and it is also Homecoming Weekend. Talk to you soon!

Love,
Mallory
